++Yay for food
09.17.05 (2:51 pm)   [edit]
I hadn't realised how much I had missed Chinese food 'til today. My mom and I went for wonton. Tomorrow night I'm going to her place for dinner. There were lots of Chinese places in England, but we didn't go to any because T doesn't like Chinese food. For some reason she thinks it's all pig's feet and seafood :roll:

But my fridge is full once again. It's stocked full of vegetables and fruit. Tonight I'm making pizza. Right now, I'm making some stock, too.

I wore one of my new skirts today, and got two compliments on it!! I got this skirt at the Portobello Market in London. It's long and flowy (like the trend is over there right now), orange and floral with sequins. I first noticed this skirt on a woman on the tube. She had it in tan and her top and accessories were so well-coordinated; I was envious. Then lo and behold, I saw the same skirt either that day or soon after. I totally scored!

Day 1: London

(Photos in the links)

T and I met up at Vancouver International on the Sept. 1, and then checked in. I think it was about noon when we left. We arrived shortly before 6 am at Heathrow, so we had to circle around for a while before landing. We landed at about 6:05 am. Then T and I took the Tube, and found our hotel. We stayed at the Beaver Hotel in Earls Court. It was kind of what I expected -- small and just had the bare basics.

We dropped off our stuff and started walking. We walked all day that day. We hit the Natural History Museum first. We went in because it was free. There was a dinosaur and human body exhibiti. This was where our "Tour de Balls" started. Balls as in ... you know. Everywhere we saw male genitalia or anything related to it, we snapped a photo. I would have liked to have seen the diamonds exhibit, but we didn't really want to pay. It was amazing how the displays for so great for something that cost nothing!!

Then we got to
Hyde Park. There were lots of birds around, and there were all these nice lounge chairs for people to sit on. Too bad we don't have that kind of stuff here. I thought it was weird that people weren't taking advantage of those chairs. The weather was great!! It was really quite hot.

For the rest of the afternoon, we just walked...We hit Harrod's and went in for about half an hour?? It was too overwhelming, so we just looked at some food and some accessories and left. We went by the supermarket and bought some stuff. I bought some milk. I liked their allergy alert on the carton.

We were pretty beat. We'd been walking around since the morning, and by the time we got back to the hotel, it was probably over 12 hours later.

I love the supermarkets in England, I must say.

When T went to take a shower, she came back out and told me there was no hot water. Actually, I had noticed earlier that that there was no hot water from the faucet in the sink. She told me to tell the guy at the front desk, so when I went out there and told him there was no hot water, he gave me the "what do you want me to do about it" look. Anyway, it turns out she hadn't waited long enough for the water to get hot. :lol:

Seemed like *everything* took a while to get going, including the lights, the TV, and the water.

One thing I noticed was that paper towels are not common in public "toilets". Our washrooms here are equipped with paper towel dispensers. There was only one place that had paper towels. But the toilets were generally very clean, to my surprise. Another thing was that they always had hot and cold faucets. I am so used to having warm water coming out of one faucet. It was fun trying to wash my face with hot and cold water.

I thought it was also weird that people were encouraged to leave garbage everywhere. There were constantly people picking up "rubbish." And the air pollution was quite lovely. It gave us black boogers. The air used to be like that in Hong Kong, too, but it's not like that anymore.
