++Day of Caring
09.23.05 (1:01 pm)   [edit]
Okay, I do know some of my strengths and some of my weaknesses. I am a great packer. I am a HORRIBLE painter. For the past 3 years, I've participated in our work's Day of Caring where the United Way assigns us a place to go and we do work like painting or gardening or whatever. Every year we've done painting. I dread it because I'm messy and a klutz!! But we did sanding, too. I am sure I will be really sore tomorrow. My back was really achey too. We sanded and painted about 11 tables and a shed. There were about 10 of us.

By the end, it was just a few people painting and the rest of the group "directing." :lol: Everyone watched me struggle with opening the paint can, and then I was named after my painting techniques. I just kept dribbing white paint on the brown and vice versa. Rosie-ising, they called it. :P :lol:

I have paint all over me. I have a new pair of painting pants now :) I think I will take up the physio the doctor prescribed me.

I'm tired now. I'm glad it was a sunny day. I'm either going to take a walk in a bit or go to the gym even though what I'd really like is a nap.

Anyway, trip recap :)

Day 7: Cambridge

We got up and got ready to do our thing. We were in the kitchen, and T told me she was gassy. And then it hit me. OMG, the stench. It wasn't one of those passing things. I had to leave the room. That was horrible. But funny. We were going to book a place to stay in Oxford, so T called 3 places, which were all booked. Then she got all frustrated and gave up. It was getting late, too. I tried suggesting we could do our touring and go to the Cambridge tourist info centre to see if they could help...but no. So we waited until she got really frustrated, and then we left. I think at that point we also decided to ask JB if we could stay another night and just head off to Paignton early. In Paignton, we were going to stay at her co-worker's mom's place.

We went into Cambridge and checked out King's College. A lot of their colleges offer tours, but many areas are restricted. I really wanted to walk on the grass or something because it looked so lush, but the grass was off limits to non staff and students, I think. It was off limits to me, anyway. We didn't stay that long because T was kind of bored :roll: I would have loved to hang around and take more photos. I can't imagine going to school at such a nice place! Mick Jagger's son goes to one of the colleges there right now.

Then we went went looking for something, which I can't remember, but T took us on a wild goose chase. She thought we were following the right roads according to some map. I know it's not nice to gloat, but if she had listened to me in the first place, we wouldn't have circled the same spots like 3 times. I had originally suggested we go back to where we were and go from there since we actually knew where we were at that point. Turns out we were really close to what we were looking for :roll:

For lunch, we grabbed something quick. I buckled and got a "jacket potato". It's not easy to find a baked potato except with dinner over here. Over there, they're everywhere with a variety of toppings. I just had mine with sour cream and bacon. After the bacon at the Beaver Hotel, I was a little skeptical, but the bacon I had with my potato was GREAT! Still, English bacon is more like our back bacon here. I'm used to more fat!! ;)

We met up with JB, and he asked us what we wanted to do. T just wanted to go back to his place. She was like, "we'll make you dinner tonight." Afterwards, she apologised to me in private for volunteering us.

I didn't really have a problem with it, but I was hoping she wouldn't expect too much from me. And I know what her cooking style is *grimaces*. We went back JB's place, and while he went off to football practice, we went grocery shopping.

To my disappointment, his nearest store didn't carry any Cadbury's stuff. :x She decided on making a roast. I picked out the veggies and got some garlic bread. On our way back, I snapped some photos. They have cute street names there, and the sunset was really pretty. I felt like I couldn't take too many photos because T was walking way ahead of me (like it was the whole trip. I think I know her ass really well now). After we got back, she decided to clean. I felt kind of bad for not doing any, but she likes doing that kind of stuff. I went on the Internet.

The ovens over there are different. I had no idea what the symbols meant on the controls. We definitely weren't baking the meat. When JB came home, he switched the dial, and we ended up with really well-cooked meat. Everyone else ate the meat on their plate. I ate two bites of it. I'm not a big beef fan, and I am very picky about it. I just can't eat well-done meat. They seem to enjoy well-done meat over there. So for dinner, we had the beef (cooked with no "aluminium" foil); roasted baby "courgettes", carrots, onions, and cherry tomatoes; garlic bread; and yorkshire pudding (I wish we could buy them frozen over here!); and green bean stir fry. I think they're called runner beans over there. No dessert.

After dinner, T went upstairs to take a shower, and then disappeared for the night. JB and I watched 40 Days and 40 Nights. Then I packed!

Oh, and as for packing, T kept laughing at me when we left London that I'd never be able to fit all my new stuff in my suitcase :roll: I wanted to smack her, but only because I knew I'd be able to do it. There was a lot of empty space in my suitcase when I first arrived.

I also got rid of about 15 pairs of thongs while I was away. (And you know how much space those take up ;))
