I think tonight will be a good sleep since I ran for like half an hour today. I just hope my body can adjust.
This is the postcard from Bath that I sent myself:
Sept. 13, 2005
Dear Rosie,
We spent the last couple of days doing sightseeing and shopping. It wasn't until yesterday that we started asking for the VAT refund forms from shops. D'oh! I have spent enough to make it worth my while to get some $ back. My bank card stopped working today, too.:( [For some reason, my bank card did not work in Bath, and it was only in Bath!] In Bath, we saw the Roman baths & the costume museum (my fave) and got a tour on a bus. [When we were on the bus, I exclaimed, "oh, it's the Gaaaaardens" in my fake English accent, and the women in front of me turned around and looked at me. And when you say Bath in English English, it's not just Bath, it's Baaaaawwwwth. T says you have to sound constipated to sound English.] I spent a bundle at Ann Summers again. The Cadbury Store was a disappointment but the ice-cream was good. We stayed at The Manor House B&B which was really nice. Carrying my backpack everywhere was hard work. I saw the thing on the front of the postcard, but I have no idea what it is.
TTFN, Rosie
T and I had a little bit of time to kill in Bath before going back to Paignton. This breakfast was more full than at the Beaver. There were corn flakes, but I don't remember if they were weird tasting or not; cardboard like toast, except for that egg-like bread; and fried eggs with bacon and a tomato.
I had sure to snap a photo of the front of The Manor House before leaving just because it was so cute. T and I took a cab into town and we went to the Costume Museum. We bought a combo ticket when we went to the Baths. The museum was really interesting, and it had clothes from about the 1600s to present day. Fashion took a long time to change back in the day. When we saw the 1980s stuff, we didn't even feel it represented what we felt was the 80s. I wondered if the infamous J. Lo dress was a replica or what. We had a chance to try on corsets and dresses that were .... I forget from what era. The dresses were thin white cotton.
We also saw the Assembly Rooms that were connected to the costumes. They fixed up the rooms. Back in the day, people danced, played cards, and attended concerts there. They seemed to be quite the events! Photography was not allowed in those rooms, though.
We were originally going to do more sightseeing but we got sidetracked by the shops and trying to re-visit stores from where we'd already made purchases. We wanted to get those VAT refund forms! Tourists to Canada can also get a tax refund, but there are several rules to follow -- just like for the VAT refund. I wish Ann Summers had them. I spent about £200 at their stores collectively, I think.
I was hoping to buy some stuff at the Cadbury store, but the stuff I wanted was cheaper at supermarkets, so I didn't buy anything except for an ice-cream cone. Maybe I had flake. But whatever flavour it was, I got some chocolate sauce on top. The sauce was nicely chilled by the time I paid for my cone. That was a messy eating experience.
Then we bussed back to Paignton. We had to switch buses in Exeter, and on our way there, the bus had picked up so many students. They were all quite stinky. Actually, there were a lot of stinkiness in England. I guess you can't help sweating when you're there; it was quite hot. T and I got stinky, too. Peee-yew.
We had planned on having dinner before going back to Mrs. H's, so she wouldn't have to make any special arrangements for us. I would have really liked to get some Chinese "takeaway," but T didn't want any Chinese food. Even me telling her there was an Indian place right next door didn't work. Luckily, the Chinese place was closed, or else I would have been mad...like I was thwarted another English experience. Anyway, we had to this pub, which seemed to have cheap food. And the place was always packed every time we passed it. We figured it must be something special.
I had sausage and mash, and T had a pickle sandwich. I figured I should give bangers and mash a whirl since I was in England. But I don't even like sausage. I was hoping English sausage would change my mind, but it did not. The best part of my meal was the peas. I think the mash came from a box. And T had been craving dill pickles during the trip, so she was ecstatic when there was pickle and cheese sandwich on the menu. Anyhow, she was sooo disappointed. It was this greasy cheese sandwich with a little thing of relish on the side.
Then we went back to Mrs. H's, and we chatted (probably for an hour at least). And that was the end of our Baaaawth adventure.
