++A tiny step
12.13.05 (7:32 pm)   [edit]
So the building I'm living in is a little over a year old. However, the strata I belong to is almost 10 years old. The first building of the strata was built around the same time. About six years ago, that building was getting leaky.

Repairs were chosen to not be made. People living in the building voted on this. However, the repairs must be made now. Last spring, everyone in the strata voted to not take this issue to court. It'd have been neighbour vs. neighbour.

I was flabbergasted that people voted that issue down. By taking the issue to court, a judge would have decided if people living in the newer buildings would have to contribute to the cost of repairing that first building.

Tonight, we voted again, and the issue will be taken to court. I am relieved. And in the case that the judge says everyone in the strata will pay, then the council has the option to sue the developers, the city, and others who were involved.

Tonight, the sales agents were at the meeting, too. Interesting. My agent had a duty to tell me the issues when I was shopping. He already knew about the leaks when he sold me my condo. :evil: Ugh.

Just make sure to do a lot of research before you buy somewhere. I didn't know this but I was allowed access to all the strata's old meeting minutes, but I never saw any of them. The minutes would have given me a very good indication about the situations there!

If your agent knew about the leaks and didnt tell you, you might have some recourse if the people in the new buildings have to pay for the repairs in the old ones.

Yeah, someone on the council is already preparing for some recourse in the case that the newer people have to pay for these repairs. But I was told I could also write a letter of complaint about the agent who sold me my place. I haven't been mad enough to write it, I guess. :-/

Condo issues are a bummer. We just fired out management company in October, and since then SO much better! Issues were lingering for YEARS before they even acknowledged it!

Wow, YEARS? That is awful! Thankfully, our council is pretty good. It'll be nice when I am in a house and don't have to deal with this kind of stuff...however long that will take *L*
