++Take that!
12.29.05 (10:44 am)   [edit]
I'm not particularly proud, and I don't know what came over me.

I went grocery shopping yesterday. Well, all I needed was a carton of milk, so I got it and went to the Express Lane (12 items or less, baby). And the store was busy!! There were 3 express lanes open, and there were still lineups. I think there were about 8 people ahead of me.

I noticed the man in front of me had a lot of things in his cart...more than what would belong in the express lane, anyway. I casually remarked to him, "this lineup is for 12 items or less." Some people just don't realise where they're standing...

He kind of looked at me and got this mad look across his face...maybe it was more of a "how dare you talk to me" kind of look. Anyway, it wasn't a look of appreciation.

The conversation went like this:

Man: I have 12 items.
Me: This line up is for 12 individual items or less [implying not 12 different things].
Man: (counts his items...realises he's wrong). Well, if the cashier tells me to go a different lineup, then I will. (looks smug)
Me:  Of *course* they're not going to tell you go to a different lineup. You should respect the other customers who are waiting in line.
Man: I am old enough to deserve respect.
Me: And I'm old enough to follow the rules! [As an after thought, I wish I said I was old enough to count.]
Man: (silence)

Luckily, a new express lane lineup opened, so I left the man. Later on when I turned around, I saw him moving to another line. And he was headed towards the regular line ups. The original one we were in wasn't moving, but I still felt like I had won some battle.

I just thought it was the stupidest conversation I had in the supermarket with anyone. I am a little embarrassed I made a big deal out of it, but it was the principle of it. Had the lineup been short, I wouldn't have cared. But the last thing I want to do is stand in a line of a million people and then have the person in front of me have a million things when all I have is one item.

And he was no senior citizen. He was probably around my dad's age. So having him pull out the whole "old" card didn't sit well with me. Why can't people just admit when they've done something wrong?? On the other hand, I also just don't deal well with men who try to exert any sort of authority around me. And I like to get in the last word.

Today, I had a 'net acquaintance ask me if I realised how important I was to him. I was flabbergasted. I just don't hold him in the same regard.

Last night, Poola and I saw The Producers. Man, Uma Thurman is great. It was a great movie. Too bad some kid kept getting out of his seat to walk past us a few times. And he wasn't even going to the bathroom. He'd just walk to the end of the aisle, go down the stairs, and come back to his seat. :?

Am I getting a little bitchy? Do I need to get laid? The feeling has passed. Maybe it's been replaced with anger

Oh I hate people who do that! I'm like, dude, you are NOT qualifying for the express lane here. Those people almost always write a check too which ends up slowing the line down even further!

One of my biggest peeves in the world are people with literally a wagonload of groceries who won't let someone with three or less things cut ahead of them. It makes me nuts. I always offer cuts in line...

Even ~MORE~ annoying? People who can't use the self check-out. Dude, if you can't find the bar code on ANY product (any of the 12,000 of them!!) you should NOT be trying to check yourself out of the supermarket!

Notthat I'm bitter or anything... *giggle*

good for you for saying something to him. When I was a cashier in a grocery store. I wouldn't care so much if it wasn't busy if a someone had a couple more items. but when we were busy I would tell my customer that next time he should go to the regular line. it's just not kool to do stuff like that.. It wasn't so much the number of items. To me it was if it can be in a basket then it was good to through express.

Sometimes I pay at the service counter, if I have things don't require a scale. But this store is a little different!! Maybe I would have been nicer to the dude if he let me go ahead of him!! I have the worst luck when it comes to choosing lineups.

I am soooo glad that it's rare for people to write cheques here at the supermarket. I remember when I worked at a clothing store that we'd always have to ask for all sorts of ID and then call banks and stuff. ugh!

BWAHAHAHA Self checkouts haven't caught on here yet...I think I'd be scared to use it if there wasn't anyone else around!

Cashiers are usually so courteous to customers with too many items in an express lane!! I couldn't let him get away with it!!
