I was so surprised to see my boss. He came back to the office after seeing a movie. I'm glad he was there because there was no sly way for me to send him an email.

There is ALWAYS a way to send a suck-up email to show how early/late you're working - particularly when you're heading out for a long weekend.
For future reference, just email him about some issue that has been resolved or something that has been 'band-aided' for the time being, you want to keep him up to date in case something happens while you're OOTO.

My manager doesn't quite manage that way. I did send a very late night email to my coworkers involved on the project, though! I guess my opportunity to let my manager know would be in my status report. But he's given me an unofficial afternoon off! Woo!
