I got it!
10.12.06 (6:19 pm)   [edit]

So I went for my interview today. I left their office like 2 hours ago, and they just called to offer me the position.

(Hold on...they don't even want to ask for references?! I was going to send them a follow up thank you email and everything!)

So...I have asked for the weekend to think it over.

The opportunity is GREAT in terms of me calling the shots :-) And they *want* the tech writer to be involved with the whole development process, and I'd be able to get into usability stuff!!!!!!

I am worried that I'm not geeky enough for this job. They want someone who really knows her way around computers. I am comfortable around them, but don't ask me to set up a network...or get rid of the BSOD (unless rebooting does the trick).

It's a total startup environment though. It's great for gaining experience. It truly is, and I think I will really enjoy the culture there. The company is young. But with startups come fewer perks. They don't even have any benefits set up yet. It will be another month or two. (Good thing I have my dentist and optometrist appointments lined up for next week). They're actually a subsidiary of a really big company. They were bought out last month...so they are a startup with financial backing.

The pay is a sliver more than what I am making. I don't know if it'd cover my gas costs. THe company is going to move in the new year...what if it's even farther away from my home? *L* Anyway, I have things to think about. I just need to review their letter first.

I completely forgot to ask about vacation and scheduling. I wonder if they'd give me 4 weeks vacation. It took me 5 years to get that much vacation time...I don't want to start with fewer than that.

Anyhow, should I accept the job, I'd be starting Nov.1. I don't think I would be able to hide my blogging and surfing activities at the new place. They don't even use cubes! BWAAHAHA Productivity  1 Blogging 0.

And my best friend had her boy today!! Name TBD. It's a great day!

Sounds like you have a lot to think about. How much do you like where you are presently at? Do you like the people you work with or are you indifferent about them?
I say you can always work your way up the ladder, but if you don't have a good wualiy network of people to do it with, you'll never make it to the top!
My adives: just make sure you are going to enjoy the new environment/people... that is what makes or breaks a job!!!

Yes! I most definitely can...I love the idea that I can be there during the whole process. I don't want the job to be perk-less forever! It's an exciting time for the company.

Everything about the job itself sounds pretty exciting. The environment sounds really engaging. The commute will kind of stinks...and I will definitely have to negotiate about vacation! They have offered two weeks of paid vacation and that is half what I currently have!

Sounds promising!
Make sure before offering that you plead your case for more paid vacation days!!!! If they give you 3 weeks would you take it for sure?

I agree, you worked your way up to 4 weeks paid holidays, I think that's something that would be hard to give up!

I would take 3 weeks I guess (even though 4 would be better). I did fire back an email with lots of vacation questions (whether the 2 weeks was negotiable and if there would be opportunity to earn more vacation time). I was going to bank one week this year so I could have 5 weeks vacation next year. D'ooooh.

Hi rosie!
I was just in your position recently with a job offer (the new job I'm currently working at). It's definitely something you will need to sit down and think about. Take out a sheet of paper, get a pencil and make yourself a little list of pro's and con's for staying at your current job. That might give you some good brainstorming ideas....When I left my last job, there were WAY too many con's against me in staying. I knew in my heart that the time was right for me to move on. That didn't mean starting over would be easy - it never really is. But ultimately, you have to ask yourself: "Am I happy at this job? Can I advance? Where do I see myself in 6 months....or even 6 YEARS??" I know vacation time is important, as well as sick leave, but seriously, 2 weeks of vacation just starting out at a new job is really pretty good. At my old job, we had what the company called "TOP" time which stood for "Time Off With Pay." Unfortunately, this time was used for both sick leave and vacation time, so that kind of sucked....I know long commutes really suck too, and with gas prices being as high as they are, I'm really glad I work much closer to home now! :-)....I'm sure after thinking long and hard about the offer over the weekend, you will make the right decision - one way or the other! Do keep us posted, ok?? :-)

The way I see it, you basically know everything that you want out of this job. Monday I'd just call your contact person there ask about the vacation, the location, if known, where they'll be moving, other perks, etc. If his/her answers are pretty positive, I say go for it! Congrats.

I think I will be taking the job. The manager upped my vacation time by a week. I guess there is no harm in asking for what I'd like; I just hope I don't seem like a pain in the ass!!
Are you liking your new job now??
