posted by: bicepfan (reply) post date: 11.04.06 (1:52 am) I'd guess there's a 50% chance ant 2 will walk the same way as ant 1 and a 50% chance ant 3 will walk in the same direction, so a 25% chance they all walk the same way and never meet? (assuming as breakouttheglass says that they walk the same speed...) What a funny question to be asked at an interview. posted by: lynne (reply) post date: 11.04.06 (8:14 am) That is a funny question to be asked in an interview. If they are all walking at the same speed, the chance that none of them will meet is 25% as bicepfan says above. There are eight possible combinations of ant directions and two of them involve the ants all moving in the same direction. 2/8 = 25% But the real answer is that you cant give an answer because you werent given all of the information needed (i.e. the speed of the ants is necessary in order to give a precise answer). posted by: doeeyed (reply) post date: 11.06.06 (6:25 am) too much thinking this early in the morning can't be a good thing. posted by: rosietulips (reply) post date: 11.06.06 (9:36 am) Reply to: breakouttheglass I guess those ants were walking at the same speed *L* They don't always walk in the same direction, so they either meet or not. Anyhow, the answer is there is a 25% chance these ants will never meet! posted by: rosietulips (reply) post date: 11.06.06 (9:38 am) Reply to: bicepfan Wow, you are good! You got the answer right :) The ants have a 25% chance of never meeting. North Americans sometimes ask logic questions to see your thought patterns. A common question is to ask someone to figure out how many gas (petrol) stations a city has. posted by: rosietulips (reply) post date: 11.06.06 (9:38 am) Reply to: lynne I didn't even factor in speed! But you got the question right! I think my manager wasn't really expecting many people to get the answer right. posted by: rosietulips (reply) post date: 11.06.06 (9:39 am) Reply to: doeeyed *L* gets youro juices flowing in the morning! Unfortunately (or thankfully?) I have no more logic questions ;-) |
