Um, yeah
12.14.06 (3:56 pm)   [edit]

We have a couple of tech writers on contract here. I guess I am supposed to be directing them, but I have a hard time doing that, only because they are older than I am and presumably have more experience.

One guy wants to have all three of us discuss style. I guess that is fine, but I guess in this situation, too many cooks would spoil the broth. This one guy who suggested it, I would be happy to discuss with him.

But the other contractor...I gave him a template to use for his writing, and I gave him a list of articles to write. I already knew he was wordy when I saw his samples. I wasn't really comfortable about having him hired. He does old school word processing. Nowadays in Word, after you end a sentence, you only need to type one space after the period. You no longer need to type period-space-space.

So this guy...didn't use my template, writes novels where the summary goes, his steps are like 4 lines long, and he used "it's" in its incorrect form.

GAAAAH

Maybe I am a technical writing snob, after all. I have been looking at candidates and seeing how closely their writing style resembles mine. My work may not be perfect, but it's pretty good!! My biggest flaw is that my writing is too concise, and sometimes I assume the reader knows too much.

Oh, and I have decided I am going to get a new car in 2010. I think I will need that much time to save up. However, my "Check engine" light came on today. I hope it's nothing to worry about because I don't plan on getting it checked out just yet!

Argh. I know what you mean about the double space after the period. Occasionally I make changes to documents that have been in our system for years and most of them have this. I'm surprised we ever used the two spaces, makes the sentences look strange.

LOL
Rosie, I can see why this guy at your work would annoy you! I don't consider myself the world's most perfect writer, but I get easily annoyed by a person's bad grammer or bad writing, LOL At least you don't have the problem I have with a chick I work with. She has been known to tell people on the phone that she's the so-called "Resident Expert" in the permits department! :-( So annoying!....

i had those kinda plans of buying one in 2010 and not before. But today my Old Subaru refused to start and changed my mind to change the vehicle as early as new year eve. I know, i know i will have to spend all my 'rainy day' savings plus some loans besides loosing my old sweet heart, Subaru Justy :(

The two spaces thing went back to the olden days *L* I remember my Grade 5 teacher telling us to put two spaces after periods and one space after all other punctuation.

*L* And you don't think your coworker is an expert?? Our contractors aren't being hired to write, so you'd hope they were professionals!

Oh no! Your Justy! Will you be excited to get a new car? I will miss mine. I've had it for 11 years now!

I just don't want to piss anyone off! I gave the contractor his piece of writing back with red marks ALL OVER IT! And then I had the nerve to say, "I just had a few comments." BWAHAHHAAA I'd rather have my boss deal with him. I'm not paid to manage!

No, I don't have a Justy either :) I'm not sure I'd ever get a Subaru. It's always the cost that kind of takes away the excitement of a new car, eh? *L* It's even worse when you *must* get the car!
