Interview tomorrow
02.13.07 (9:57 am)   [edit]

I have a group job interview tomorrow.

How the heck do those work?! Do I get to size up my competition right then and there??

I would love to work for this company, provided the pay is decent, and the environment is good for tech writers. I am ready to move on from this job I've had for not even 5 months.

Now...would it a good or bad thing for me to point out a typo in the company's downloadable fact sheet? And if it was a good thing, when would be an appropriate time?? (After I get hired?!)

I know where you are ocming from! Good Luck in the interview... the group setting may just mean that you will be being interviewed by more then one executive from the company you are seeking the job (that's my guess).

PS... I would maybe just non-chalantly mention the typo in the interview... near the end, as to not make it into a big deal.

I think there will be only 2 interviewers, but if I am going to be in the room with the other candidates at the same time, I hope they are all duds!!

I've been on tons of these interviews and yeah, you basically get to see some of the competition right there. Usually they do a couple of these and then cut from there.

As for the typo, I'd bring it up right away - Fit Girl's suggestion is excellent - or maybe when you're leaving the interview. It won't hurt since it shows that you've done your homework and though this is one of the keys to getting a job, MOST people still don't bother!

Good luck!

I don't know if I will be able to stand out from the crowd...We won't all have to talk at once, will we?? I'm so quiet!

I guess I will mention it when I leave...at least I can provide a lasting impression ... if they don't appreciate me finding an actual mistake!

yeah don't think any of your competition will be in the interview, just execs. Hmm if it was me I wouldn't mention the typo, but that's because I don't speak up too much.

I am looking forward to the interview.
I do want to appear like I am detail-oriented but I don't want to offend the company by pointing out their mistakes!

Not sure on the terminology but I had an interview where there was a large group of candidates together and they got us to do role play and things like that in small groups. It was a bit strange as it makes you feel like you need to try and stand out and pretty much act which I'd think defeats the object of an interview. The strange group activities were followed by a normal interview which you'd like to think carries the most weighting.

Role playing??? EW! What kind of position was this?? I hate that kind of stuff *L* But I can't imagine technical writers needing to role play. I guess I am a traditionalist with this job interview thing :)

But now my interview is on Friday! That gives me a bit more time to prepare, but I was looking forward to this event!

Thanks! I have not been happy with the work conditions at my current job, and I feel I need to part of a team rather than a cog in the wheel (a little ironic being that I work for a very small company right now!)
