03.02.07 (11:49 am)   [edit]

It dawned on me the other day that when I go to Chinese restaurants with people who aren't 100% Chinese, or if I am by myself, I am often treated like a non-Chinese person.

I get the North Americanised menu, and I am not asked what kind of tea I want. Sometimes, the staff talk to me in English.

I know I don't look like an immigrant, but that doesn't mean I get to be treated like I don't know anything about eating in a Chinese restaurant.

I hope they feel a little embarrassed when I talk to them in Cantonese. But I doubt it. *L*

North Americanised menu I didn't know Chinese restaurants had 2 menus!?! Learn something new every day!

If you are with older people, do they treat you more Chinese? I actually think it had more to do with age and less to do with your Chinese-ness... People in retail (even FOOD) always discriminate against young adults! Like we are all BAD or something! The are confusing us with our teenaged counterparts.

Oh well, it's not our fault we look so young and fresh :)

And who said racism was the domain of the white man?

A lot of Chinese places here have Chinese-only menus, and they are different from the ones with English. The ones with English tend to be "safer" items." But I want the real Chinese stuff!!

If I'm with older people, I don't have to deal with the wait staff BWAHAHAA And they would assume I know the language since everyone else around me does.

*L* I probably wouldn't like being treated Chinese if I was in a Canadian restaurant.

I would never say that :) Chinese people are very much into their own beliefs, looking down on people who aren't Chinese.

So authentic Chinese food is different of course than what's offered at a restaurant ?
I'm thinking more freakish veggies and sea oddities than than the North American continent caucasian palate is use to?

Also I always wondered about those crab puss with the cream cheese in the center. I understand the Chinese aren't really dairy eaters ( in fact I hear lacotose intolerance is a big issue ), it's obviously caucasianized.

I wouldn't call the veggies freakish...they're just vegetables *L* And we like our seafood :D

Crab puffs with cream cheese just sound white to me. There isn't anything puffy in Chinese cuisine, and lots of Chinese people HATE cheese. They think it stinks. But yes, there is a lot of lactose intolerance amongst Chinese people. I'm glad I can eat my dairy products!!

A world with no dairy is scary for me !

Although...I'm lactose intolerant and not Chinese .
I can eat cultured products though.
