A little accident prone
05.08.07 (8:14 am)   [edit]

Last week while I was driving to work (practically half-asleep), I was looking at oncoming traffic (while at a red light as I was preparing to turn right) and rolling forward. I forgot there was a car in front of me. Anyway, I thought I stopped myself in time before I tapped her bumper.

Yesterday I got a letter in the mail saying my car was in a motor vehicle accident. I'm thinking... "hmm, I guess I did hit her." I checked out my car, and there was no obvious damage (how could there have been if I didn't even think I hit anyone? BWAHAHA). There were a few specks of paint missing where I would have made contact, but I don't even remember if those specks were missing from before. In the last year, I haven't been as careful with my car, and the bottom of the front of body kit is really scratched up. And I've noticed several more dings from other people (GRR!).

I called the insurance people and luckily (?) they had an open spot for me to get my car checked out that evening, so I brought my car in. My adjuster doesn't think my car did all the damage that the other vehicle is claiming. I have no idea how much damage is on the other car because I never saw it post-accident -- as I had no idea I did anything!

They also said the height of the damage on the other car doesn't really seem to match the height of my car. With the body kit on my car, it appears quite low to the ground. When I drove past the accident location this morning, I think there was a slight decline in the road. Now if she was flat and I was on a slight decline, where on her bumper would I have caused the damage?

My adjuster is going to tell the other party (I think it was a woman...I don't know for sure) that we are not accepting fault for the damages. They'll have to figure out how much of the damage was caused by my car. And then I'll get a bill. I am fine with paying for whatever damages I caused, but  I didn't have plans to spend a few hundred dollars on car repairs!

With this situation, they also need to make sure she's not filing some fraudulent claim.

yes be careful she isn't filing a fraudulent claim. I went through this a few years ago.Unfortunately the insurance did pay her out. When they called with their decision they told us it was easier to pay her out than fine her for fraud. She claimed more damage than what my car caused. Plus claimed a neck injury, caused by her not wearing her seat belt. I hate ppl like that. I hope your insurance does something about her. With my case this girl is going to continue to get away with that crap.

Thankfully, this woman isn't claiming injury! Usually ICBC is really good about making sure victims don't get as much as they deserve. I hate dealing with ICBC here. UGH!

You're not going to believe this, but this very thing happened to me this past weekend. Hubby and I were waiting to merge into traffic (this was not an interstate) and boom! My head whacked against the headrest. "Did we just get rear-ended?" My husband said some curse words and got out to meet the rear-ender to assess damage. No damage. Friendly interchange. No head damage to me. What a coincidence, though!

Phew! I'm glad there was no injury or damage! I've done the rolling thing to someone before, but the guy found no damage. Phew! I've also been rolled into, but my back is so sensitive, I felt pain almost immediately! But my insurance company wouldn't accept an injury claim because there was so little damage done to my car :-/ Booooo!

Ok did I miss something? Did you talk with this person after the mishap? How did they know it was you if you didn't? Video camera at the light or something?

For some reason my husband HATES paying for car insurance, he says it a giant rip-off, however when his 17 yr old son managed to cause a pretty nasty accident 2 yrs ago he saw just how valuable it can be, lol.

*L* No, I didn't even stop after the accident. I saw the driver turn down a street, but I thought that's where she was headed. I did not talk with the driver after the alleged accident. Maybe I did tap her and didn't notice. I have a beast of a car, and she was in some little Japanese thing (didn't pay attention to what it was). There was some witness who passed along my license plate, and that was it.

It's illegal for us to drive without insurance. I have yet to cause any nasty accidents! It's always me tapping something. I'm a really cautious driver when I'm actually moving faster than a couple of miles an hour!!

Ahhh someone ratted you out! Figures. It's illegal here not to atleast carry liability insurance. I'll admit this was my first ever auto claim, so ya, they've made some money off of me. But my step-son managed to total two cars and injure a few people, thankfully none of them seriously. But by the time you add up all the medical bills and auto repair the bill was a biggie. Plus our premiums will be higher for 3 years.

It's okay someone ratted me out...It wasn't like I was trying to run away and get away with it. Besides, when they look at the cars, they'll know if there was an accident or not.

One of my friends scraped a cement pillar when backing out of a parking stall and scratched a lot of paint off! The he tried to claim someone did it to his car, but the adjuster was like .. "hmm...looks like cement chips. Are you sure you still want to claim?"

I don't know how it works when someone claims injury here. I think the person responsible for the accident doesn't have to pay the medical expenses and just the car repairs with a higher insurance premium.

At this point, if I have to pay for the other driver's repairs but I claim it on my insurance, it would take me 7 years to pay off! BWAHAHA

Sounds like a scam to me.

It could be! I wish I could see what damage is on the other driver's vehicle. I don't even know what she was driving except that I remember it being some Japanese silver thing.

Hopefully, your insurance will cover your posterior - by them filing a claim, it can impact your insurance rates down the road (no pun intended). If they didn't call the police and file a report, that makes one wonder...

Next time, let them hit YOU. ;)

Although my adjuster was pretty confident that I wouldn't be responsible for paying all the damages, he did give me a worst case scenario. If I let my insurance pay for the claim, it will take me 7 years of increased premiums. Otherwise, I can pay for the damages out of my own pocket and not have my insurance affected.

I wonder if the other driver speaks any English...She knew to call the insurance people. Most people don't report t heir car accidents to the police. I don't know even if they're interested unless there's been a lot of damage!

If you even call about a question on your insurance, be it auto or homeowners, it flags you and you risk potentially having rates go up. Even though I wasn't at fault for my car accident, beause I have damages, some insurers won't touch me now. You have to file a police report in most cases here for the claim to move forward.
