Camping recap
05.23.07 (12:56 pm)   [edit]

I chopped wood for the first time in my life! Mr. Nick made it look so easy and FUN!

I had s'mores for the first time in my life, too. They were kind of gross. Maybe I will try recreating them in the oven.

The customs agent that we spoke with on our way down was a bit of a dink. Mr. Nick and I had to cross the Canada-US border to get to our campsite. He tried to be intimidating, but how can you take someone seriously when he asks Mr. Nick if he and I are related. Sure, I can understand if he asked us we were married...but related?  I wanted to say, "yes, he's my brother." (I'm Asian and Mr. Nick is Caucasian.) Then he asked us about our professions and what were going to do in the States.

We told him we were going camping, and the agent seemed a little bewildered. From his last name, I deduced he was Chinese, and most Chinese people do not camp. No wonder he was a little confused. "Why do you have so much stuff?" "That looks like a lot of stuff." And he poked our bags a little. He also asked why we were only going for 2 days. And why we had so much stuff for 2 days. Again.

What I like least about going through US customs is that we get spoken to as if we never want to leave the States. That is the POV they always take. When I used to visit my ex in the States, I got a hard time most of the time, especially if I didn't have a lot of personal items with me. Usually I brought a small backpack with a few toiletries. They just figured I'd never want to come home. Please, get over yourselves.

On our way back, our Canada agent asked us how long we've been away and where we went. That was it.

Apparently tourism is down in the US because of this exact complaint.

All these "safety measures" that the US is taking...are annoying. They have so many rules and restrictions -- why would people want to visit when there are so many other countries that are more welcoming? It's like the US is trying to keep themselves in a bubble.

But then again, I am used to traveling, so I am not that bothered.

I dunno...I cross the border probably 20 times a year, and although I used have a harder time going south than north, of late i've been dealing with a lot more stress coming home than going to the US. I don't know if it's cuz I've crossed so much and the Americans know i'm a frequent business traveller or what, but it really is easier to cross southbound than northbound. I get WAY more attitude from the Canadian guards than the US ones, although the Canadian's do tend to be friendlier when they send u on your way.

Strange! Coming home is usually quite fast and pleasant! Are you traveling by air or car? Get a Nexus pass if you're driving down that frequently!!

And no, you haven't been blocked. I am just not signed into MSN during work now!

When I make s'mores ( never while camping..that close to nature w/leaves as toilet paper ..no thanks !)
I went RVing twice and that cured me of anything to do with back to nature stuff.
I digress, I make s'mores with whole grain , no trans fat cinnamon graham crackers, Whole Foods marshmallows ( natually vanilla flavored ) and some dark 70 % choco ( never Hershey's way too chalky) .
Nuke it for 30 secoonds. Now that 's some serious PMS fixins...

Mmm...your s'mores sound guilt-free!!! I've always liked Hershey's chocolate, but you know what I've also noticed? American and Canadian chocolate taste different, even if they're named the same!
