Reason #5233890 why I hate my job
05.31.07 (12:36 pm)   [edit]

Ever since we've moved offices, I've been disrupted by visitors looking for the Office Manager more than anything. If she's not at her desk, which seems to a be regular occurrence, visitors talk to ME. I am right by the door in plain view.

There is at least one visitor a day. There have been two this morning and the OM informed me where to find a cheque for someone if they dropped by. Ugh. I don't know know all the details of the goings-on around here. That's what the Office Manager is for.

When I leave this hell hole, I almost hope there is no exit interview. It would not surprise me at all if there wasn't one. At least I can avoid telling them how I really feel. I never want to burn bridges.

What do I like most about working here? The work.

What do I like least about working here? Where would I start? The non-supportive team members? The non-existent micromanager? The lack of process for anything? The lack of communication? Everyone passing the buck?

I would not be so choked had my manager been honest with me from the beginning. I asked all the right questions during my interview so I could decide if I would like the environment. He made things sound promising and that he was 100% behind on having process and having the Technical Writer play a huge role in development.

I have yet to be part of a development meeting. I get updates for interface text requests afterwards. My boss isn't in the office half the time. He doesn't mention when he is away on vacation or when he will be gone for days on end. He's never offered me any feedback. He has not done anything -- not one thing-- to help me succeed with my job at all.

I guess I could take on a more proactive approach, but why bother? I've hit so many dead ends on various facets.

How about situating yourself so that you're not facing the action of the office? Or put a plant to block the view? Or have a sign that says "GO AWAY!" or "No Habla English"

Oh man. One of my co-workers has almost the exact same problem. It is totally related to where he sits too. It is funny too because when he takes a break, he puts up a HUGE sign that says "On Break" and people *still* come up and bug him.

Anyways, I am sorry to hear that your workplace isnt so nice. Trust me, I know how much *that* can suck.

There is no where to hide! With the office layout, everyone's cubes are quite private, and there is a tall wall blocking all the other cubes. I sit alone on my side. Maybe a big tree would help block me, but when the OM is not there, the visitor could stand there forever and no one but me would see them! GRR!

*L* Yes, I've kept up with your work situation for quite a while now!

Hopefully I won't be here much longer and I won't have to endure the visitors.

How about a big tree to block you and then add an annoying bell for people to ring for service. Or you could put an electric shock collar on the OM so that if someone needs assistance while she's gone, she'll be zapped back to her desk.

Then again, you could just quit. ;)

Oooh, I am just waiting for the day that I can quit! I can't even tell when the OM is away from her desk, either since the wall between us is high!
I like the bell idea!! A bell that would also set off her electric shock oollar!! YEEEEEAH!

Get Kate (chica) to bedazzle the collar so it looks really pretty and fashionable. It might only work once, but wouldn't it be fun!

I can't even imagine what you're going through...you must be one of those friendly looking people that everyone wants to talk to as well! Try being grouchy like me...that usually helps! :)

What the hell is the Office Manager doing? How annoying! Employers are like men...they'll say anything to get you, but the follow-through may be disappointing.

You're right--never burn bridges. Walk away and never look back, maybe.

I try not to make eye contact with anyone that comes into the office, but when they're just standing there looking confused, I can't help but offer to help :-/
