I accidentally found out who won Canada's Next Top Model when I glanced at a cover of those daily free newspapers. GRR! *sniff*

We watched Sicko last night. It was pretty depressing, and I cried a few times. It was a little tiresome with Michael Moore dryly poking at the US health care system. But it did make me think. Often we complain about the Canadian health care system, but it could be worse. But was what Moore saying really true? Are there really that many Americans who've gone broke because they can't afford health care? Is it really that serious?? And with all the HMOs? How can Americans live like that? Where are people's consciences? Depressing.

I have an aunt and uncle who live in California. She told me that when my uncle retires, they play on moving to Canada so our government will take care of them into their old age. Lovely.

I haven't kept up with any tv watching lately. Ugh.

As for Sicko...it's on my list for the weekend. If you have a chance, "Manufacturing Dissent" is playing at the Vancity. It's a great look at HOW Moore makes his films including the 'fudging' of facts.

If you get teary from movies, I suggest bringing tissues to Sicko!

I love going to movies at Vancity! I just rarely get a chance. Manufacturing Dissent sounds interesting!!

Maybe now you'll recognize her when she takes your order next year at McDonalds.

I'm not sure I'd take a film at face value that sets out to discredit Moore. Sure, he has an agenda, but he makes valid points.

I find Moore kind of intriguing. I'd love to know more about him. I remember reading about him going to Cuba for Sicko. How did he go and get back to the States without being punished??

I haven't seen Sicko, but I think he took a bunch of sick people, intending to go to the Guantanamo base, but when they denied him entry, they landed in Cuba and went to a hospital there. Of course, he probably knew that's what would happen. I think there was talk of punishment from the conservative camp.

That is exactly what happened in the movie, and I am aware of the embargo for Americans regarding Cuba, etc., but I've never known what happens when Americans go to Cuba after they come home!

Hi Rosie -- yes, it is true that a large population of Americans do not have health insurance. We have health insurance and pay a high price for it with a huge deductible. We are lucky that we don't have huge medical bills.
Many service type jobs do not pay health insurance for their employees. Even WalMart makes it impossible for some employees to get insurance.
If you don't have insurance, then when you go to even a clinic, you must have the cash to pay the bill at the time of service.

Some people who know that they will have a huge medical bill, will transfer assets to other family members just so they can keep their house if they end up filing bankruptcy due to medical bills.

A few reasons medical bills are so high here is because, those who can pay, pay for those who cannot pay. Medicine is now a for profit business thanks to bills that passed to make it this way.

Very sad and tragic in many cases.
It is terrible that if you can't keep up, you end up with a lot of stress and eventually losing everything.

Thanks for all the info! I find it sad that medicine is a for profit business rather than being a service for those in need.

Inkspector has done an excellent job of summing it all up for you. Most of the bankruptcies in this country are due to outrageous health care costs. If I didn't have health insurance, I'd be dying right now. They paid $30k for one surgeon to perform one surgery. The hospital stay itself is separate and just as costly. I've had three surgeries so far. Plus chemo and radiation. Don't even ask how much those cost. I could never ever afford to be treated without insurance.

Thank goodness for insurance...as long as your company doesn't try to screw you over!
