(if the food was bad, then it's the server's responsibility to ask "how was everything?" to ensure you are satisfied when you leave the restaurant/establishment! Otherwise, "no tip for you!" lol) Being an ex-waitress, I know what good and bad service is... I tip accordiing to that. And if the wait staff thinks I'm cheap, whatevs... they'll forget about it by tomorrow! lol posted by: twitchy67 (reply) post date: 08.16.07 (1:04 pm) I tend to tip 20% unless it's bad. I kind of have a ratings system and I knock off points or add points as things happen. If the service and food really knocks me over, I'll over tip a little bit. If it's just average I'll aim for a rounded 20% but round down instead of up. If there was a problem that was sorted out to my satisfaction or beyond, they get the full pull. If they piss me off, however, the tip gets smaller really really fast, and I write on the bill why the tip is small or non-existent. I've always been of the mind that if you undertip but don't express why, the wait staff is just gonna think you're cheap and stiffed them. I WANT management and the server to know if my experience sucked so that it can be fixed. posted by: rosietulips (reply) post date: 08.16.07 (1:36 pm) Reply to: Fitgirl The amount I type also depends on the eating establishment. Casual Chinese places tend to receive tiny tips. But it seems like most people tip more than I do... posted by: rosietulips (reply) post date: 08.16.07 (1:37 pm) Reply to: Twitchy67 I usually double the GST and round up. Well, I used to, until they lowered the GST rate! Chris Cornell is coming to town! Are you going? posted by: katz (reply) post date: 08.16.07 (2:26 pm) I have always believed that tips are earned not a given. The writer of that article is probably a waiter as well. posted by: rosietulips (reply) post date: 08.16.07 (2:32 pm) Reply to: katz I was a little suspicious of the article, that's for sure! posted by: ggirl (reply) post date: 08.21.07 (9:20 am) I'm still at the 15% level. I guess I should rethink it. If it seems like poor service is the kitchen's fault, I don't penalize the waiter. However, if there aren't many people there and the waitperson doesn't come by to fill glasses, I definitely tip less. Recently, at M.D. Anderson, we went to a hotel restaurant and several people had obviously called in sick (or just didn't show up). There was one poor lady who was trying to seat people, take orders and deliver the food to the tables. A hotel manager came to help her, but he was useless. I overtipped in a big way, even though service was spotty, at best. The woman was working her butt off. She deserved it, whether or not I got what I wanted in a timely way. |
