Wally World
11.22.07 (9:51 am)   [edit]

I watched some of a documentary about Wal-Mart recently, and it gave information about groups trying to form unions and how Wal-Mart deals with such groups. It also touched on all the legal issues that Wal-Mart has to deal with because of how it treats its employees.

The documentary reminded me of my last employer. I never said who our one and only client was because I wasn't sure I could say. Anyway, it was Wal-Mart. When I found out, I wondered if having that information would have affected my job decision...like whether I would have taken the job or not.

So far, there are no Wal-Marts in my city (and we have a lot of big box stores). I don't think I'd shop at one if one did come to my city.

And while I was away on my shopping spree, I missed out on the Amnesty International Film Festival here. Bummer.

The weirdest thing happened last night. I was laying around watching TV, and by 9:15 pm, I was dozing off!! That is so not like me!! It was also difficult getting out of bed this morning. I must figure out why I am so tired...again. Tonight, we're going to see Iris Chang: Rape of Nanking. I can't wait.

I'm sure some of the practices of Wal-Mart today would make Sam Walton cringe, atleast I hope it would I like to think he was a good man with good principles. Eventhough I don't advocate many of the practices of Wal-Mart people have to understand that for folks like me who live in very rural areas there aren't many choices besides Wal-Mart. Of course there are some small stores and I am lucky enough to live a half hour's drive from Knoxville and have options. But some people simply cannot afford to do that and therefore are at the mercy of corporations like Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart is evil. I'd sooner shoot myself in the foot than shop there, but I do understand that not everybody has the luxury of "choosing". For those that HAVE to shop there I have absolutely no beef...just wish they didn't have to. For those of us who can afford to shop someplace with a moral conscious, we definitely should avoid the place.

It takes way too much effort to go to the nearest Wal-Mart around me! I know people who do shop at Wal-Mart and they love it!

Mr. Nick and I were discussing why people go to Wal-Mart despite their business practices, and we know that Wal-Mart is some people's only or most affordable choice. I like a good saving, too. I guess despite my debts, I am still lucky enough to be able to choose where I shop!

I hope my comment didn't come off sounding too pious, or anything but I was just trying to say that some people have few choices. I personally despise our local Wal-Mart SuperStore, it's spread over several acres and I like being able to go right in and get something not having to walk forever for a few items. Now Sam's I love, lol. I expect to have to walk forever in there!
