Now's the time!
12.13.07 (10:55 am)   [edit]

I am free of my (home) phone company now! I also hate them now, too.

I was a Sprint Canada customer, and then they merged or got bought out or whatever with Rogers, and with the change came new billing practices. It's been nothing but headaches for me, and they were never totally clear with what was going to happen to their customers -- or at least customers in my situation.

When I was a Sprint Canada customer, they were offering monthly discounts if you signed a one- or two-year contract. I signed up for a 2-year contract, giving me 15% off my total phone bill (before taxes) every month. They did notify how people's plans were changing, but it didn't seem like it was going to affect me. They just said to call Customer Service to make sure your plan wasn't changing. Mine is quite basic: land line with caller ID and voice mail.

I started getting the new bill and everything was fine, but about 3 months ago, the discounts just stopped. I called Customer Service, and they re-applied the discount for me, and told me that I was back on getting the regular discounts. But the next bill came, and the same thing happened -- with the same resolution. The last time I called, the CSR told me that on the screen, I was going to be getting the discount for 2 more years, but it wasn't going through. She said it was an IT issue and that it wouldn't be resolved for months, and that I should call every month to have them manually update my bill.

A pain, but I figured things would get resolved.

This morning I called Rogers and spoke to the CSR and said that my discount was no longer effective. I personally don't think she had a clue about my Sprint account despite me telling her that I was a Sprint customer. They have CSRs that don't have access to old account information, and I bet she was one of them. I only wish had the other phone number.

She just said that the discount didn't apply to me because I didn't use two or more of their services, i.e., no cable or Internet with them. I explained to her again that my discount was for signing a contract, and not for their current services. She put me on hold for a long time, and I think she was getting clarification from someone.

Anyhow, if I wasn't going to get my discount, I wanted to make sure I wasn't still under a two-year contract. I mean there was no formal letter explaining any of this. Legally, I assumed that the contract was then null and void, but I wanted to make sure.

So...the lame CSR gave me a "goodwill" discount equal to the same one I got last month even though it would have been more proper to give me 15% of the bill I was calling about. She said it's been noted with my account that I understand that I will no longer be receiving 15% off my bill and that I am not under any contract.

It means I can switch telephone providers and not be penalized. I need the cheapest way to have a landline at home! Does anyone have any suggestions?

How about the old tin cans attached to a string method? heh

Does the tin can thing really work? I never tried it as a kid. I just figured you were always close enough to the other person and that's how you heard them!

I just use Bell. I never have problems, but I also probably pay a bit more because I never search for discounts. Sorry you're getting the headaches...customer service is abysmal these days.

I didn't even know Bell had home phone service! I seem to be out of luck today because whenever I click the links at Bell's Web site for more information about anything, it tells me it can't find the page!

Quest at least in the US has a cheap just telephone service, I added 6.00 per month for mine for Caller ID which I no longer really need!! Now I'm getting my broadband cable through them, and my total phone bill will be aroung 65.00 dollars a month..had to make a 2 year commitment for that. I had their service, yet when I got "high speed internet...it was only 256K!! not the 1.5Mb they advertised...finally getting 1.5Mb!! Is it possible to google Phone service of Canada? Just a thought!!! Good luck!!!

I don't have a home phone but we recently switched my parents to Shaw home phone service and when bundled with our cable, we got a bit of a deal (plus something like the first 3 months free). Service works fantastically well. They come in and do the install for free and even cancel your old provider.

I have a couple of friends who are using Shaw Digital phone and they have no complaints either. I knew a guy who worked for support with the digital phone and he said that often other phone companies would give them the runaround for customers switching! I will have to keep my eyes peeled for deals. Right now it's one month free if you sign up by Dec. 31, 2007. I already get my Internet and digital cable with Shaw!

Can't help much on this one other to say that I have dealt with Quest here in the states and I like their service, don't even get me started on Bell/AT&T,ack. But we've been without a landline for nearly 3 years now, I've forgotten what it's like. lol

How could you not know Bell Telephone doesn't offer home phone service? lol

And no, I doubt the tin cans and string work. String would not be a very good conductor of sound.

Do you talk on the phone much? Maybe if I had a brick phone, I could do without a landline...But I insist on having a handset and one that I can put between my shoulder and my ear (or speakerphone).

I don't know! Every time I see their stores, I just think they're a cell phone provider and satellite TV provider!

I have a very good cell phone, and I use the heck out of it! My last cell phone was cheap and the quality wasn't very good but this Summer when it was time to renew my contract I got a good one with a good speaker phone, I also use a headset at times at home. I honestly don't miss the landline at all, especially since the kids all have their own phones and there's no fighting over the phone.

Well, u know the industry i work in... I haven;t owned a land line phone since way back when i was in the wireless industry. Now it's all IP based... dirt cheap and easy.

Bell has been in business long before cell phones and satellite tv! It's always been my family's telephone company and I'm 43 now.
