Friends and business don't mix
05.14.08 (9:41 am)   [edit]

My golf clubs arrived today! I only ordered them on Monday, and they were supposed to take 7 - 10 days to arrive. I want to open up the box right now!!

The Godmother's boyfriend is a relatively new real estate agent. I mentioned to The Godmother that I was planning on selling my place, etc., and she mentioned this to her boyfriend. Of course I'd like to find out the market value of my place and to find a new place... but...I don't know if I'd want him as my agent. And he has been an eager beaver with the emails and phone calls.

If he lived in my city, it might work out better, but I don't feel he knows it very well. (He's only lived in the region for a few years, and he's hardly visited or lived in my city.)  Also, there is a large Chinese population in my city, and he is not Chinese. I don't want to talk shop with him because I don't want to feel obligated to hire him! I'd feel better having an agent who could deal better with the majority of the demographic in my 'hood and one who didn't require 45 minutes to an hour of travel time to meet face-to-face.

hmmm yeah, I think I'd want to use someone that has no personal connection and that definitely knows the nieghborhood better.
Good luck! :)

The Godmother is putting you in an uncomfortable position. I hope she won't be mad if you go with someone else.

I hope she won't, either!

Why not tell them you're happy with your current agent and don't plan on changing, but you'd be happy to talk to him as long as he understands that

They know I don't have an agent right now. I guess I can always be honest with them, but I don't want them to hate me for it!

A good real estate agent has to learn very quickly not to take things personally...he will understand if you say that you already have someone else in mind who is connected with the Chinese community. Real estate agents get told "No" about 300 times a day! (I used to be a real estate broker...many years ago!) It's CRITICAL to your sale that you get someone you're comfortable with and who really knows your area...as a real estate agent he will understand that.

I hope he will understand...because I really don't have any intention of hiring him...
What other industries have you been in??

I've been a jack of all trades and master of none! I was in real estate, then construction, then new home sales, and I also worked at Danier Leather, as a grocery store clerk, bank teller, legal assistant, aerobics instructor, technical writer, Dickie Dee ice cream girl, maid, bus girl, secretary, receptionist, animal care technician...and now I'm working on becoming a tattooist, which was what I wanted to be the whole time but my folks wouldn't allow it. :)
