Miners ahoy!
07.31.08 (12:03 pm)   [edit]

Yesterday, I spent a whole day getting to and from a mine site for a tour. I guess I always thought mines were like what I saw in cartoons...always underground, dark...and kind of like that ride at Disneyland.

Anyway, we went to Highland Valley Copper for a visit yesterday. It was nothing like the cartoons! They do open pit mining...the site was amazing. I haven't had a chance to upload my photos yet. It was like looking at miniature canyons. It was a very interesting learning experience. Not only did we see the mines but we also went into the mill where they process the ore. And it was neat to see the land after the mine was not used anymore. Lots of wildlife and flora and fauna there!

Mines are pretty cool. I've been to a salt mine in Austria and we got to put on the old mines clothing and we boarded a mine trolley that took us deep deep deep underground. Then we hopped onto a wooden slide that took us even deeper were they still excavate the salt. Pretty cool.

Wow, visiting a salt mine in Austria must have been NEAT!
From my understanding, the mine I went to gets lots of German tourists.

Same with the one I went too. I'm thankful that my parents loved to travel when my Dad was stationed in Germany.

I'm glad my parents took me places when I was younger, too!

We've both have had a rich and traveled childhood experience then. I wouldn't have traded it for nothing :)

I've been there too! - I hear that people either love that ride or hate it, cause the song stays in your head once you hear it! ;)

I thought open pit mining was frowned on by environmentalists, but it sounds like they are trying to do their part when they are through by what you say.

I never really thought much about mining, but the mine I visited seemed to try their best at doing the least amount of environmental damage possible. There was an eagle nest in one of the mines, so they sent $15K to move it 10 km. And there are lots of wild animals living there (some endangered) and lots of varieties of birds. And trees started growing on the site, too...without any planters! It was all very cool!
