Gift?
10.30.08 (1:42 pm)   [edit]

(One of ) Mr. Nick's childhood friends is engaged. He and his fiancee are a great couple. They're going to get married in Mexico.

They're also throwing an engagement party. They've asked everyone to bring liquor...375 mL per person. They will also specify what each guest is to bring.

I find the request tacky.

They're getting married at a locale that will cost people a flight and accomodation to attend.  I assume they will accept gifts. And now they throw a party for themselves while expecting their guests to contribute to it. C'mon.

So do we still need to bring a gift?

I probably wouldn't ask if they were my friends or if they hadn't asked people to bring alcohol to the party.

No, they are not poor. And Mr. Nick and I don't drink either. We'd be happy to supply some sparkling apple cider. BWAHAHA Anyway, the hosts will be supplying finger food and non-alcoholic beverages.

A couple of my friend had engagements party thrown for them when they got engaged...What is the etiquette around engagements these days!?

This is in very poor taste, TACKY is a good word.

Agreed. VERY poor taste. I say if they're asking for alcohol and food, then a gift is not required.

I'm still trying to get over the fact that people try to squeeze every cent they can out of weddings. I've stopped going to wedding showers. If I wasn't forced to because of family, I'd probably stop going to weddings (except close friends) all together. Ugh.

I just hope I don't get the personalized email specifying the liquor I am to bring. Maybe Mr. Nick and I will "forget" to bring ours?

Being invited to weddings these days just mean $$$$ for the guests. Like Mr. Nick said, "what happened to the days when you were invited to a wedding and then just went??" I guess this couple will invite everyone to the wedding who's being invited to the party. And if you can't make it to the wedding, too bad!

It seems like eloping is the way to go to these days if you don't want all the fanfare for a wedding! UGH!

I couldn't imagine asking my friends to bring something to a party that they have to give away or share. I knew another cheap guy who had a housewarming, and he asked each person to bring a bottle of wine.

I used to want one of those. Did you know it's really difficult to get into a latex outfit?!

I can imagine. Even the new racing swimsuits they use now can take twenty minutes to get into. But how do you know if you don't have a latex outfit of your own?

Maybe I got so frustrated trying to put on the damned thing that I decided I would never buy a latex outfit!!

Seeing you try to wiggle your way into it would be entertaining.
