Gold's Gym in Richmond, BC sucks ass
07.03.09 (12:01 pm)   [edit]

I'm sure the gym is great if you sign up and never leave!

I signed up and canceled my membership within 10 days. The sales guy said I could get a full refund no questions asked if I canceled within 10 days and that I would receive a cheque in the mail. Well...almost 2 months later and no cheque.

I had a lovely experience talking to everyone I needed to. The gym bounced me to accounting, and accounting gave me the president's phone number because there was nothing more she could do. The guy is simply NOT signing the cheques.

I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I think they are already in the system.

My complaint looks like this:

When I went in to Gold's Gym in Richmond, BC in May 2009, to ask about a trial membership, I signed up for a full membership with the promise that I could cancel the membership within 10 days and get a full refund. I decided to cancel the membership within the 10 days, and went back to the gym to sign the paperwork. I was told (as well as it states on the form) that I will get a full refund within 30 days. I have yet to receive any refund.

I called up the Gold's Gym to ask about my refund, and was given the number of accounting. I spoke to a lady there who said that a cheque for my refund was cut on May 20, 2009, but it still required the president's signature. She also mentioned that there were cheques from January that required his signature.

In order to inquire further, I telephoned the president, Victor (604-312-9800). He answered his phone, and I told him I had canceled my membership and was still waiting for my refund. He said he was "in discussion with the CEO about how to handle it" and did not offer me any other information. Then he promptly hung up.

Apparently, I will get a response from the BBB in 5 - 6 weeks. I don't think the guy will respond to anything. Victor is actually the CEO...he sounded so friendly when he answered the phone. Then he sounded angry when I said I was calling about my refund. I got to chatting with the accountant. She really wants out because of the way he is treating the clients and his employees. Her assistant quit and has also filed a complaint about him.

I cannot believe that Gold's Gym! They have a couple of other locations, but not all Gold's Gyms are the same.

It's unfortunate that there are shady people like Victor! And he is opening up more Gold's Gyms in BC! He is giving the legitimate Gold's Gyms a bad name.

Can you sue him...in small claims court or something? perhaps get punitive damages also!!

It'd probably cost too much to sue for $82.95. I just want my refund back, and I want everyone else who is waiting for their refund to get theirs back as well!

If that understanding clerk would give you the names of the others...could start a class action lawsuit...get thousands back!!

Rosie I hope that you will eventually get your money back but like most business now he is probably operating in the red and don't really have the money in his account and if he write you that refund the check would bounce.

That happened to a local City Councilman here that had owned a restaurant for years, business was bad and he was writing a lot of bad checks to pay his employes or not paying them at all.

I'm not sure how legit the franchise is in the first place seeing how they proudly clung to their association with Arnold Schwarzenegger until Arnie severed them for political purposes. The gyms in Southern California at least were a haven for bodybuilders juiced with steroids. I know it was just a subculture, but Gold's did nothing to dissuade steroid use among members, or from people selling them in their gyms.

I'm not sure the clerk is legally able to give me names of customers...But she did call me back that afternoon saying that the president signed the cheques. When I asked her if he signed everyone's, she said he signed only the latest stack...so who knows!

The gym has been "open" since January, but they are still under construction. I don't think the gym has had their grand opening yet. I wouldn't be surprised if they are taking a while to drum up the rest of the costs to open the place.

Oooh, good to know about the possibility of the cheque bouncing. I don't think it will, but at least I have gotten Visa to reverse my original charge, and if the cheque bounces, I will more paperwork to prove that the gym didn't give me my refund!

When I went to the Gold's Gym website for Richmond, it looked like they were trying to update their image since they had photos of scrawny people lifting 5 pound dumbells!!

No more Gold's Gym for me even if their cardio equipment is amazing!

I have to admit the sales guy was good. WHen I asked what personal trainers they had on staff, he showed the book with their info, and there was ONE trainer on staff.
When he asked me what I did for my workouts, I told him I did only weights, and he wowed me with the cardio equipment.
And when I asked him if I could my own personal trainer in, he told me I could anyone in for a 10 day trial....

You can do what I did...
1. Called Visa to have my original membership fee charge reversed.
2. Called their accounting dept to follow up on my refund.
3. Called the president to follow up on my cheque that he needed to sign.
4. Joined the Gold's Gym - Richmond Facebook group and posted on the wall to slammed their sales team and the president (also saying I was going to the media).
5. Filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

Anyhow, I was lucky and they sent out my cheque that day I jumped through all those hoops. I have deposited the cheque and will see if the funds remain in my bank account!
