When you say "Asian culture," do you mean Israeli culture or Tibetan culture? Or are there other parts of Asia? People may have a preconceived notion of what an Asian is, but it's probably wrong. posted by: SusanofPudlin (reply) post date: 07.19.04 (6:47 pm) I am enjoying reading your blog from the perspective of an Occidental tourist... dating a man from Hong Kong. I try to be sensitive, and non offensive... hope that I am. I would be loathe to say "oh, I think Asian men are all - whatever. Truth is - he is Heni and I am me and I think he is wonderful and would not want to change anything about him. AND I am grateful for you sharing your thoughts on the stooopid generalities that people make. posted by: rosietulips (reply) post date: 07.20.04 (5:21 pm) Reply to: mblog I know Asian culture is very...varied...but I think most people think Asian as Oriental. And for some reason, the term Oriental is derogatory in some places. I don't think of it that way. posted by: rosietulips (reply) post date: 07.20.04 (5:27 pm) Reply to: SusanofPudlin I can't see you being insensitive!! You have a great attitude towards you and Heni. I love it!! posted by: SusanofPudlin (reply) post date: 07.20.04 (6:00 pm) Reply to: rosietulips Hehehe Thanks! Actually, I am teaching him a few words of Yiddish. It is SO cool to hear him say, did you see that schmatta she was wearing??? We also have an inside joke about how I prefer things that were "made in China". I do love my Boo... posted by: mblog (reply) post date: 07.22.04 (11:34 am) Reply to: rosietulips Any word is derogatory if people want to think of it that way. Oriental fell out of favor for no good reason. Some claim that it carries an outdated or negative image, but are people who don't like Orientals likely not to have stereotypes about Asians? Another thing is that it's consistent with the way we like to group others. Blacks have become African Americans. If we group people by continent, then supposedly we are being even handed. It still raises problems. Is somebody from Egypt who lives in the US an African American? Most people would say no, but why not? Is a black person from Canada an African American? Canada is part of North America, and there's no country called America, so I guess it makes sense. What about a white person from South Africa who lives in the US? A high school student like that got in trouble for trying to run for African American student of the year. And what about somebody from Jamaica? What about somebody from Kenya who is just visiting and not American at all? The idea of classifying anybody by continent is pretty pointless, especially when you are really talking about only a subset of the continent. I just hope people don't start calling me a European American some day, and I have no idea what they will call my children, who are mixed. |
