America's Next Top Model 4
02.21.05 (1:22 pm)   [edit]
So...the next season starts up next Wednesday. That totally sucks because it coincides with my dance classes! I wonder if Paula and Erin would consider watching it Thursday nights...

I am disappointed that there are no Asian contestants this "cycle," as they call them now.

One thing I have noticed about American TV is that either everyone is black or white. Why don't they ever focus on other ethnicities? Maybe this question just stems from the fact that I live in an area with a huge Asian population.

Americans would have to take something like ethnic diversity into consideration and that takes effort. If Americans were prove to putting forth effort McDonald's wouldn't make billions of dollars every year. Regardless, I'd say your lucky to miss the show. Reality tv rots your brain.

Au contraire, mon frere ;-) I do plan on taping that show. One thing that I do not really care for is the US' melting pot. Hey, have you heard Beck's new single?

If I'm not mistaken there was an Indian chick in one of the previous shows. But she got kicked out for stating she wasn't really into it for the modeling, rather, she saw it as a stepping stone to start her own clothing company. Ouch!

The unfortunate part was, all through her solo ramblings, she was always yakking about how they needed more Asians on the show, and how she'd represent her people blah, blah, blah...which is cute. But what about her, what does SHE want?

I guess we all have differing views.

I don't see the blacks in the business representing blacks. As a black woman I certainly don't get any high from seeing them strut the runway...I say, as long as they're interested and they do thier job well, kudos to them.

I'd rather people get in on talent and merit rather than anythign else....oh and I guess in this show, how good they are at backstabbing their team members, hehe....

Bobby is right! It rots my brain, but I watch it nonetheless, hehe...

Oh right!! There was...I forget her name...the Indian girl last season, and in the previous one, there was April who was half Japanese. But one Asian seems to be their max!! Today I read there are about 60 Asian roles on American TV. That sounds way low!! But only 1 more week 'til America's Next Top Model!! Thanks for stopping by my blog :-)

I also live in an area with a huge Asian population. My city is about 30% white, and about 7% black. There is no ethnic majority. Asians are now over 40%, but it doesn't feel as if any group outnumbers anybody else. "Asians" is a broad term, and covers everybody from Laotians to Indians to Chinese, etc. So it's not as if there's any large group that stands out. There's also a large Hispanic population, so there are people in every shade wherever you go.

With all that, I notice that when "race" comes up as an issue on TV, it's almost always about black and white. Characters are almost all black or white. I think it's an issue because there has been more publicized historical friction there. It's not that Chinese laborers had it so great 100 years ago, but it's not something that will get the attention that slavery and its legacy rightly deserves.

As for parts on TV, it takes a while for people to notice before the powers that be assign different people to different roles. Asian women are now considered hot, and are getting more airtime. Asian men are getting the shaft. It's impossible for most Americans to name an Asian leading man, except for action stars. The romantic Asian male lead is scarce, if he even exists. Unless you watch the dubbed Korean movies that are the rage here, but they are usually dubbed into Chinese. On the other hand, nobody is surprised to see a hot looking Asian woman show up on screen.

Even where I live, black/white couples are still pretty rare, but there are all other mixes, and people wouldn't even give it a second thought. So it's not surprising that the attitudes extend to TV. At 12% of the population, blacks better show up on the screen. But Asian Americans don't see TV as representing a different culture, even if the people don't usually look like them.
